To be honest, when I set out to test this gadget I was a bit dubious as to whether it would really make much difference. In our previous house we had a shower timer – just a cheap plastic, sand-filled hourglass courtesy of Anglian Water – and this low-tech solution worked surprisingly well, when we had the discipline to use it. So would having a different shower head really make more of a difference?

There are many different eco shower head brands on the market, but after reading an article online, I decided to try out the EcoCamel. It cost me £35 including postage and packaging. I got the Jetstorm E model specifically designed for an electric shower and/or low pressure systems. Apparently it is important to buy the right model for your own individual shower because this can affect the performance. The company threw in a free shower hose which it said was worth £10.
The EcoCamel is meant to improve the ‘shower experience’ by using what it calls aircore technology to mix air with the water, increasing the water pressure. The air forces the water out of the shower head with the same power as a normal shower but supposedly using less water. According to the company, water flow is limited to 8 litres per minute and the average family of four is meant to save around 10,000 litres of water a year.
